We present a covariant formalism for studying nonlinear perturbations of scalar fields. In particular, we consider the case of two scalar fields and introduce the notion of adiabatic and isocurvature covectors. We obtain differential equations governing the evolution of these two covectors, as well as the evolution equation for the covector associated with the curvature perturbation. The form of these equations is very close to the analogous equations obtained in the linear theory, but our equations are fully nonlinear and exact. As an application of our formalism, we expand these equations at second order in the perturbations. On large scales, we obtain a closed system of coupled scalar equations giving the evolution of the second-order adiabatic and entropy perturbations in terms of the first-order perturbations. These equations in general contain a nonlocal term which, however, decays rapidly in an expanding universe.

Long wavelength limit of evolution of nonlinear cosmological perturbations

In the general matter composition where the multiple scalar fields and the multiple perfect fluids coexist, in the leading order of the gradient expansion, we construct all the solutions of the nonlinear evolutions of the locally homogeneous universe. From the momentum constraint, we derive the constraints which the solution constants of the locally homogeneous universe must satisfy. We constru...

Nonlinear perturbations of cosmological scalar fields with non-standard kinetic terms

We adopt a covariant formalism to derive exact evolution equations for nonlinear perturbations, in a universe dominated by two scalar fields. These scalar fields are characterized by non-canonical kinetic terms and an arbitrary field space metric, a situation typically encountered in inflationary models inspired by string theory. We decompose the nonlinear scalar perturbations into adiabatic an...

Hypersurface-invariant approach to cosmological perturbations.

Using Hamilton-Jacobi theory, we develop a formalism for solving semiclassical cosmological perturbations which does not require an explicit choice of time-hypersurface. The Hamilton-Jacobi equation for gravity interacting with matter (either a scalar or dust field) is solved by making an Ansatz which includes all terms quadratic in the spatial curvature. Gravitational radiation and scalar pert...

Oscillations During Inflation and the Cosmological Density Perturbations

Adiabatic (curvature) perturbations are produced during a period of cosmological inflation that is driven by a single scalar field, the inflaton. On particle physics grounds – though – it is natural to expect that this scalar field is coupled to other scalar degrees of freedom. This gives rise to oscillations between the perturbation of the inflaton field and the perturbations of the other scal...
